Last night (Thursday, 15 December 2011) I watched a play held in my campus. The event in which this play was available is known as English Nite 2011. The title of this play was My Name is Sinderella and I Hate My Stepsisters. Considering the name Sinderella, we can directly point to the story of Cinderella. They have the same pronunciation anyway
. Indeed, the play I saw was adapted from Charles Perrault’s Cinderella.
I was really excited with the drama performance last night since everything looked well-prepared and also well-performed. The stage, the properties, the lightings, and the sounds were well-set. Furthermore, the facial expressiveness of each character, the way each character plays his/her voice’s intonation, and the gesture they made looked so awesome. Alhamdulillah, there was no regret I spent my time to watch it.
The concept of this new version of Cinderella (who became Sinderella) does deconstruct the original Cinderella in some ways. As suggested by the title “…I Hate My Stepsisters”, it is inevitable that it is not like the Cinderella that we commonly heard. Sinderella, as the main character in the play, has qualities that are considered as bad by people such as wicked, materialism, and arrogant. Sinderella, even, kills her stepsister. On the other hand, the one who can please the prince is Sinderella’s stepsister. Even Sinderella is the one who begs for the prince’s love.
